ChatGPT Watermark Remover: Images, Text, and What OpenAI Actually Embeds
Updated September 2026
ChatGPT marks its images and, as far as anyone has shown, does not mark its text. The image mark is a C2PA manifest and comes off in seconds. The text carries typographic residue and sometimes hidden characters, which also come off. Anything beyond that is a promise no tool can keep.
Quick answer
By output type:
- 1ChatGPT images: C2PA Content Credentials plus XMP and EXIF. Removable, verified by re-scan, no quality loss.
- 2ChatGPT text: no deployed public watermark. Non-breaking and narrow spaces, curly quotes, em dashes and occasional hidden characters. Removable.
- 3ChatGPT files (DOCX, PDF, code): document properties can name the tool. Removable.
- 4Detectability: word choice and structure are untouched by any of this. StripShot shows writing tells; it never rewrites.
Images: what OpenAI embeds
| Where | What | Effect | StripShot |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG APP11 / PNG caBX | C2PA manifest signed by OpenAI, listing the generator and actions | Meta, LinkedIn and TikTok read it for AI labels | Removed |
| XMP packet | DigitalSourceType trainedAlgorithmicMedia, creator tool | Read by platforms and stock sites | Removed |
| EXIF | Software and timestamps | Identifies the pipeline | Removed |
| Pixels | No known pixel watermark as of this writing | None | Untouched by design |
Because the provenance is metadata, the strip is complete and verifiable. The re-scan after the strip finds nothing, and the image is byte-for-byte the same picture.
Text: the space episode and everything after
In April 2025, users documented narrow no-break spaces (U+202F) in output from some ChatGPT models, placed where no keyboard would put them. The pattern looked deliberate enough that people called it a watermark. OpenAI said it was a side effect of training and would be fixed. Separately, OpenAI has said since 2024 that it has a real text watermarking method and has chosen not to deploy it publicly. So the honest status is: no deployed text watermark, plus a history of characters that behave like one by accident.
What pasted ChatGPT text does reliably carry is typography: curly quotes, em dashes, the ellipsis character, non-breaking spaces around numbers. None of it is hidden, all of it breaks plain-text systems and code, and heavy em dash use has become a recognized tell. StripShot normalizes it as an option and removes the genuinely hidden characters always.
What a ChatGPT watermark remover cannot do
It cannot change how the text reads. Detectors and any future statistical mark operate on word choice and sentence rhythm, and character cleaning leaves both alone. StripShot lists the phrases that read as generated, delve into, a testament to, in today's fast-paced world, and leaves the editing to you. It will not paraphrase, and it will not tell you the result is human.
Files ChatGPT produces
- DOCX and PPTX. Generated documents can list the generating tool as the creator in docProps/core.xml and name the library in app.xml. StripShot removes the property parts and cleans hidden characters from the body.
- PDF. The Producer field names whatever library wrote the file. Removed with the rest of the Info dictionary and XMP.
- Code and Markdown. Scan for hidden characters and curly quotes before committing; both cause failures that are hard to see.

Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT watermark its images?
Yes, with metadata. Images generated in ChatGPT carry C2PA Content Credentials naming OpenAI, plus XMP tags. Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn read those to apply AI labels. StripShot removes them at the binary level with no quality loss.
Does ChatGPT watermark its text?
OpenAI has said it built a text watermarking method and has not deployed it publicly. In 2025 some ChatGPT models produced narrow no-break spaces in their output, which OpenAI described as a training side effect rather than a watermark. Pasted ChatGPT text routinely carries non-breaking spaces, curly quotes and em dashes, which StripShot cleans.
How do I remove the ChatGPT watermark from an image?
Download the image, drop it into StripShot, click Strip. The C2PA manifest in the JPEG APP11 segment or PNG caBX chunk, the XMP DigitalSourceType tag and the EXIF block are removed. The pixels are untouched.
Will this make ChatGPT text undetectable?
No. Cleaning characters does not change words, and AI detectors and any future statistical watermark work on words. StripShot removes what can be verified removed and shows the writing tells so you can edit. It does not claim undetectability.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Images, documents and text are processed inside your browser tab.
