Remove Canva AI Metadata from Images
Canva uses Adobe Firefly as its AI generation engine. Every image created with Canva AI features embeds C2PA Content Credentials that trigger "Made with AI" labels on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. StripShot removes them at the binary level with zero quality loss.
What Canva embeds in AI-generated images
Canva integrates Adobe Firefly for its AI generation features. Because Firefly is the underlying model, the metadata it embeds follows Adobe's C2PA implementation. Canva also adds its own XMP software tags on top. You need to strip both layers.
C2PA Content Credentials from Adobe Firefly
Canva's AI generation features are powered by Adobe Firefly. Firefly embeds a C2PA manifest in every output. In JPEG files, this lives in the APP11 marker. In PNG files, it uses the caBX chunk.
The manifest is cryptographically signed and identifies Adobe Firefly as the content source. Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest read this data and apply the Made with AI label automatically. This is the primary trigger for the label on Canva exports.
XMP Canva software tags
Canva writes XMP metadata identifying itself as the creating software. The xmp:CreatorTool and dc:creator fields reference Canva as the source application.
These fields are separate from the Firefly C2PA data. Some platforms and detection tools scan XMP independently. StripShot removes both the Firefly C2PA manifest and the Canva XMP tags in a single pass.
EXIF data
Canva exports also carry EXIF blocks. StripShot strips all APP1 EXIF markers along with XMP and C2PA. The output file contains no metadata of any kind.
Which Canva features trigger the Made with AI label
Not all Canva exports carry AI metadata. The label is only triggered by features that use Adobe Firefly or Canva's own AI models to generate or significantly alter image content.
| Canva feature | AI metadata present | Triggers label |
|---|---|---|
| Text to Image | C2PA (Firefly) + XMP | Yes |
| Magic Media | C2PA (Firefly) + XMP | Yes |
| AI Image Generator | C2PA (Firefly) + XMP | Yes |
| Magic Edit | C2PA (Firefly) + XMP | Yes |
| Background Remover | XMP only | Possibly |
| Standard design (no AI) | None / XMP only | No |
How to remove Canva AI metadata
- Step 1: Export your Canva design as JPEG or PNG (not PDF)
- Step 2: Go to stripshot.app and upload the exported file
- Step 3: StripShot detects C2PA from Adobe Firefly and XMP Canva software tags
- Step 4: Click Strip to remove all C2PA, EXIF, and XMP at binary level
- Step 5: Download the clean file and upload to Instagram, LinkedIn, or Pinterest
All processing happens in your browser. Files never leave your device. Zero quality loss.
Why Canva uses Adobe Firefly
Adobe Firefly is a commercially licensed generative AI model trained on licensed content. Canva integrated Firefly to offer legally safe AI generation features to its users. From a product perspective this is a benefit. From a metadata perspective, Firefly is one of the most aggressive C2PA embedders in the industry.
Adobe was a founding member of the C2PA coalition alongside Microsoft, Intel, BBC, and others. Firefly embeds a full signed C2PA manifest, not just a simple EXIF tag. This means the metadata survives basic stripping tools that only remove EXIF headers.
StripShot removes the full JUMBF container from JPEG APP11 markers and the caBX chunk from PNG files. The Firefly signature chain is completely removed, not just overwritten.
Frequently asked questions
Does Canva embed AI metadata?
Yes. Canva uses Adobe Firefly for AI generation features. Firefly embeds C2PA Content Credentials in every AI-generated image. These credentials are what trigger the Made with AI label on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. Canva's own software also writes XMP metadata identifying Canva as the creator tool.
Will Instagram flag my Canva image?
Only if you used AI generation features in Canva (Text to Image, Magic Media, AI backgrounds). Canva images created without AI features may not carry C2PA credentials. Images made with Canva AI tools will carry Adobe Firefly C2PA data and will be labeled automatically on Instagram.
How do I remove the AI label from a Canva image?
Export your design as JPEG or PNG. Upload to StripShot. The tool removes C2PA Content Credentials (from Adobe Firefly) and XMP Canva software tags at the binary level. Download the clean file. Upload to Instagram without the AI label.
Does removing Canva metadata affect quality?
No. StripShot removes metadata blocks at the binary level without re-encoding the image. Pixel quality is identical to the original export.
What Canva features trigger the AI label?
Canva's AI-powered features: Text to Image, Magic Media, AI Image Generator, Magic Edit, Background Remover (AI-assisted), and any feature powered by Adobe Firefly. Standard Canva designs without AI features do not embed C2PA.
