How to remove AI metadata from video

01

Open StripShot Video

Go to stripshot.app/video. Drag your MP4 or MOV file in. The tool accepts files up to 500MB directly in your browser.

02

StripShot scans the container

Reads the ISOBMFF box structure from the top level. Detects C2PA uuid boxes, udta software atoms, XMP_ blocks, and FFmpeg Lavf encoder strings inside the moov container.

03

Strip at binary level

Removes udta, XMP_, and c2pa boxes entirely. Zeroes mvhd, tkhd, and mdhd timestamps. The video stream inside mdat is never decoded or touched.

04

Download and upload

Clean file ready for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. No AI metadata. No C2PA certificates. No AI labels triggered on upload.

What Is Video AI Metadata?

AI-generated videos are MP4 or MOV files built on the ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container. Inside this container, a hierarchy of boxes carry data separate from the actual video stream. The boxes that matter for AI detection are the udta (user data) box, which holds free-text atoms like ©too (encoding tool), ©swr (software), and ©day (creation date); the XMP_ box for Adobe XMP metadata; and the c2pa uuid box for C2PA Content Credentials.

The mvhd (movie header), tkhd (track header), and mdhd (media header) boxes also store creation and modification timestamps set to the exact moment the AI model generated the file. Platforms use these timestamps as additional signals.

Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube all read these fields. When they find C2PA credentials or known AI tool strings in the software atoms, they apply AI-generated content labels automatically. Stripping these boxes before upload prevents that detection.

AI Generators and Their Signatures

Every major AI video generator leaves a different fingerprint. StripShot removes all of them.

GeneratorSignature TypeWhat It Embeds
OpenAI SoraC2PAC2PA uuid box (d8fec3d6...) + com.apple.quicktime.software
Runway Gen-3 AlphaC2PAC2PA uuid box (same UUID as Sora)
Pika LabsudtaSoftware string in ©swr and ©too atoms inside udta
Kling AIXMP + udtaXMP_ box at top level + software strings in udta
Hailuo (MiniMax)Lavf + udtaLavf encoder string in ©too + custom udta metadata
Luma Dream MachineudtaSoftware strings in udta atoms. Some exports include C2PA.
WaveSpeed / WanLavfAlways Lavf since these pipelines use FFmpeg as the muxer

What About Pixel-Level Watermarks?

This is worth being direct about. Two AI systems embed watermarks at the pixel level rather than in container metadata: SynthID (Google's watermarking system, used in Veo and some Sora exports) and Meta Video Seal.

Pixel-level watermarks are encoded into the actual video frame data. They survive any metadata operation because they live in the mdat stream, not in box headers. No metadata stripping tool can remove them, and neither can StripShot. Removing them would require modifying every frame of the video, which introduces quality loss and is not what StripShot does.

For most AI generators (Sora via the standard API, Runway Gen-3, Pika, Kling, Hailuo, Luma), the C2PA and software string metadata is what actually triggers platform labels. Stripping that metadata is what matters for most use cases. If you generated video through Google Veo or received a Sora output through ChatGPT, a SynthID watermark may also be present and will not be affected by metadata removal.

Why Platforms Detect AI Video

Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube all require disclosure of AI-generated content under their terms of service. Their enforcement mechanism for this policy is reading C2PA Content Credentials and known AI tool software strings from video files at upload time.

C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is an industry standard co-developed by Adobe, Microsoft, Google, and the BBC. When an AI tool embeds a C2PA certificate, it acts as a signed declaration: this content was created by AI. The platforms read this certificate and apply labels automatically.

Beyond C2PA, platforms also scan the ©swr and ©too atoms for known generator strings like "Runway", "Pika", or "Lavf" (FFmpeg). These string-based checks are less reliable than C2PA but are still used as secondary signals.

FAQ

What video formats does StripShot support?

MP4 (.mp4) and QuickTime MOV (.mov). Both use the ISOBMFF container format so the same box-level stripping applies to both. H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) codec streams both work.

Does stripping metadata affect video quality?

No. StripShot operates at the box level. The video codec stream stored inside mdat is never decoded or re-encoded. There is zero generation loss, no resolution change, and no file size bloat.

Will this remove the AI label on TikTok?

Yes for C2PA-based labels. TikTok reads C2PA Content Credentials embedded by Sora, Runway Gen-3, and similar tools. Stripping the C2PA uuid box removes the trigger for this label before upload.

What is the C2PA uuid box?

C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) embeds a cryptographically signed certificate in a uuid box at the top level of the ISOBMFF container. The UUID is d8fec3d6-1b0e-483c-9297-5828877ec481. Sora, Veo, and Runway Gen-3 all embed this box in every export.

What generators embed Lavf?

All open-source model pipelines that use FFmpeg as a muxer: Wan, LTX-Video, CogVideoX, WaveSpeed, AnimateDiff, and Stable Video Diffusion. FFmpeg automatically writes 'Lavf60.x.x' in the ©too atom of any file it muxes.
